Lao New Year Cooking Classes

Lao New Year or Boun Pi Mai falls in mid-April and takes place over 3-4 days (unofficially lasting over a week in some locations), and marks the beginning of a new solar year, as the sun enters Aries and comes close to the Vernal Equinox. This time is seen as an opportunity to let go of the past and welcome in a promising new future. During Boun Pi, Laotian people build thousands of stupas, which are dome-shaped structures built as Buddhist shrines, along the banks of the Mekong River, which are then splashed with perfumed water to ward off evil. Statues of Buddha are also washed with water, and people splash water on one another to cleanse away the passing year.

Mok Class

April 16, 2022

Mok is a banana leaf parcel in which fish, chicken, or your choice of meat or vegetable is wrapped and then steamed. Typically made with flaky white fish, fresh herbs and chilies, and toasted sticky rice powder, Mok is a beautifully presented and nutrient dense meal. In this class, you will learn how to use banana leaves to wrap and steam chicken, fish, or duck. Chef Ann will lead a demonstration of a traditional Mok Pa and walk you through the selection of ingredients and how to steam your parcel to perfection. After the demonstration, you will be invited to choose ingredients and assemble two mok parcels to take home. Then, it is time to eat. We will have an assortment of moks available for you to try accompanied by sticky rice.

Beverages will be available for purchase.

Class Maximum 16 guests.
